We just came back today from shooting day 11, 12, and 13 of the Disparities: People & Places documentary in LA. The shoot featured a performance by Shea Scott, a young African-American student at UCLA Drama School.

Ms. Scott performed an original skit dedicated to Dr. Mehret Mandefro's work as a physician, public health practitioner and activist who has worked extensively with HIV infected and affected communities in the U.S., Botswana, South Africa, and Ethiopia.

It all came about because of our recently formed alliance with G-City Entertainment to support six (6) Caribbean Music Events in 2008, which we believe could be the perfect vehicle to introduce a benefit concert to help Mr. Foster continue to build a sustainable community in St. Thomas, Jamaica.

We attended a press conference last night for Upliftment Jamaica's announcement of a new campaign called ''CUM BACK YA''. It's a nine (9) day celebration in Jamaica for the parish of St. Thomas. The speaker of the event was Gary Foster, Chairman of Upliftment Jamaica and EVP of Rush Communications.

He spoke about Upliftment Jamaica's tourism program and economic development plan to rebuild St. Thomas, which is the most under developed parish in Jamaica. These goals are in-line with what Project54Tour believes is the key to building sustainable communities in Africa and empowering the youth.

We just received an email from Esther Passaris, one of Kenya's best-known businesswoman. She's the CEO of Adopt-A-Light project, which lights-up city streets and slums in Nairobi.

Her vision is credited with a significant reduction in crime, especially rape, and has allowed communiy shops to stay open and schoolchildren to study later. In addition, the project supports the urban slums where 60% of Narobi's population lives.

Yesterday marked another milestone for the Project54Tour team. Our Chairman, Pete Ondeng took Jeffrey Sachs on a tour through the urban slums of Kiberia. Yep, that Jeffrey Sachs, Founder of Millennium Promise and director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University.

It turns out that Mr. Sachs would like us to take part in an intervention project in Kibera, focusing on sanitation, cleaner and safer environment, job training and microfinance.

One of our Project54Tour Supporters just launched their "Hip-Hop Touchdown 4 Success" project 3 days ago at the HS for Law Enforcement & Public Safety in Jamaica, Queens, NY.

The project is a joint venture between Brandon Miree, a starting fullback for the NFL's Green Bay Packers and Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council. It uses sports and music to bridge the communication gap between youth and adults, as well as help them achieve their academic, personal and social goals.

Yesterday, we headed down to the NY casting call for Oprah's new reality show "The Big Give" to tell the story of Project54Tour & Jeri Games.

The new reality TV show that Oprah Winfrey is producing had a divine hand written all over it. Imagine over a thousand people sharing stories of how they want to "pay it forward" and help someone less fortunate then themselves. There were men, women, and young adults from different ethnic backgrounds and ages coming together for one purpose -- to share their stories and passion to help others.

We stood out in the cold for over 3 hours (many stayed longer), hands and feet frozen, yet still motivated to be one of the chosen few to get a chance to express our deepest desires. We were #727 on the casting call list and we used the time to share stories, network with fellow philanthropists, inspire hope, and encourage each other. The 12 hours seem to fly by after talking with hundreds of humanitarians who have a shared passion for giving back.

Just had a meeting with leaders of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council at the United Nations building. Joe from World Sports Alliance set it up and insisted that we meet Charles Fisher the Chairman and Founder. It turns out that their Rebuilding Africa Program (R.A.P) has some synergy with what we did in Kenya with Project54 Tour.

8 Hours shooting and a 5 hour drive from Bureti (Tired, but everyone had fun today). We were in the beautiful Rift-Valley to shoot the Bureti Story - A Woman Empowered.

Bureti is home to Edna Cherono Bore's school with orphans and the birthplace of many great Olympic, Kenyan marathon runners.

Day 8 - Perfect Place For A Concert!

We met up with Tom and he took us on a private tour of his ranch, isolated in the middle of a beautiful oasis. We couldn't believe our eyes. It's exactly the way Disney drew it up.

Day 5 - Discussing Concert Venue

One of our tour guides suggested that we meet his friend Tom in a couple of hours. Apparently, he owns a private ranch in Athi River that's over 400 acres along a river bank. I repeat OVER 400 ACRES!!! This we have to see. It's 30 minutes away from Nairobi and a short helicopter ride from the airport.

Day 4 - Scouting Nairobi

Forth day scouting and we hit a deadend. Still haven't found what we're looking for. But we did stumble upon an annual crusade in Uhuru park where thousands of Kenyans gather every other Sunday to worship.

Turns out that we were in the right place at the right time. Our first event that helps to bring awareness to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya.

Day 2 - Drive To Machakos

Second day in Kenya, not bad! People are friendly, foods great, and yes the shower had hot water. Now it's time to scout Machakos for festival venues. Turns out that 70 ksh = $1.

First we check into the Narobi Safari Club Hotel. Then we unpack our luggage. Oops! We forgot to mention that Chris had one of his bags left in London.

Despite the minor set back with British Airways, we worked out a special deal with the head manager of the hotel and received a special group discount for the entire Project54 Tour team. This 4 star hotel just received another star.

Our flight to London from NYC was a piece of cake. But when we got to London, we almost missed our connecting flight to Nairobi, Kenya, which was scheduled to depart in 20 minutes. We made it to the gate just as the doors were about to close.

For those who never traveled through London, a little word to the wise, do not bring any liquids (i.e. mouthwash, bottled water, cologne, etc) in your carry-on luggage. Fortunately, we made it safely to Nairobi and were welcomed by our Kenyan hosts.

Our Vision
Overall, the goal of our global awareness campaign is to use music, the arts, youth sport, and entertainment as a catalyst to design and implement programs for at-risk youth and young adults, to facilitate in realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through an integrated approach.

Our Project
Project54 is named after the 53 countries in the Africa Union + 1 for the people of African descent abroad. It’s a 1L1W™ Festival that will focus on engaging, empowering, and educating communities at large on health and fitness, business development, waste management, and social well-being. The purpose of the tour is to help shed light on a growing desire among many communities -- the desire to do for them.

Pete Ondeng is the Chairman of Project54Tour. He is also the Africa Regional Advisor to the Millennium Promise Alliance. He is an economic development specialist with twenty four years of professional experience in the fields of financial services and business development. Pete qualified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 1984 in the U.S. where he began his career as an internal auditor for McDonalds Corporation. Since then, he has served in leadership positions for a number of private and public sector organizations in over 15 countries.

Pete is a motivational speaker, trainer and, until recently, the host of a popular prime time television program in Kenya called “Money Matters”. He is the author of two books: How to Start Your Own Small Business (1989) and Africa’s Moment (2004).

The Jeri Youth Welcomed Project54Tour

In November of 2006 we took a trip to Nairobi, Kenya to organize a World Aids Day Event and were inspired by a community of youth, in an area just outside of Nairobi called Jericho.

Jericho, aka Jeri, is a unique neighborhood in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya. It was established in the 1960s during an explosive period of creative expression and social change. Today’s Jeri Youth are continuing that legacy through innovative film and music productions, unique cuisine, poetry, dance, and more.

What we found unique about the Jeri Youth was a development of programs and properties created by the youth themselves, that provided a creative and inspirational avenue to express and educate themselves. We've since noticed this spirit of personal responsibility and self reliance emerging in many youth groups and it has become clear that this model could be further developed and structured into a sustainable social initiative, inclusive of youth from around the world.

This vehicle for both creative expression and education will be called the Jeri Games™ and it will impart a sense of belonging in the community and increase social awareness worldwide.
